3:21 This is a Tom Cruise tribute, no?
7:47 Epic bunker, I’ll take the minibar over the foosball table.
14:22 “Tell me you have a plan.” He literally just woke up!
22:44 “I would never let anything happen to you… nothing serious.”
39:53 Why is Ethan the only one who can get to the sub? There are other divers in the world.
43:37 Curious how much of this is planned vs ret-conned.
44:53 They’re only at Defcon 3??
53:49 Yes Madame President!
54:44 OMG, they’re putting Tom Cruise on an aircraft carrier.
1:10:19 Mini submarine off a submarine! Submarine inception!
1:22:29 I always knew treadmills were bad news.
1:32:18 Submarine heaven (or hell)!
1:43:16 Like that he’s only said two words in about twenty minutes.
1:51:30 “We met, almost.” Oh wow, what a callback.
2:03:03 Don’t fully understand the plans, but hey, it’s still fun!
2:11:18 For a minute then, I thought he was going to catch up with a plane.
2:15:32 Gaffa tape gonna save the world.
2:32:13 Love that he explicitly said 3-2-1-cut. Cos it can be confusing.
2:35:11 Sooo… they switched the earth off and on again.

Thoughts

Wow, what a ride this is! It starts out pretty slow, and the first hour is a lot of set up and remembering and getting up to speed. I do think it does quite a good job of reminding you what’s going on and what’s happened across the whole series, which some (cough, Marvel) don’t do so well at all. Lots of flashbacks, actual glimpses of previous films, it doesn’t make you feel like an idiot for not remembering thirty years of movies.

So you have to get through the first hour before things really pick up but when the action starts, well, you know what you’re getting with Tom Cruise, right? Crazy underwater sequences, hanging off the side of a plane, and of course, car chase in a deep underground excavated mine. There were some moments that were SO TENSE, I almost couldn’t watch.

And it’s not just Tom, of course, he has assembled another crew around him and whilst they don’t get the chance to shine quite as much as they have previously in terms of character, it’s nice that everyone plays a part in saving the day. That split second thing, ooooof.

This leans into the nostalgia and the fan service, but it doesn’t rely on that to finish the series properly, it’s still an incredible action movie, if a little on the long side. Completely brilliant but not quite perfect, and definitely rewatchable if only for the stunts. There’ll never be another Tom Cruise.
