I was feeling under the weather and wanted something kind of relaxing to just chill out with, and although it’s not a new game under the Apple Arcade banner, it popped up as something that might fit the bill. I like doing the occasional jigsaw puzzle, but don’t really have any in the house as don’t have the time or space to have them out and leave them out. Plus I’m notorious for losing things which can be frustrating! So having it all wrapped up in the digital form is much better!
It’s in the Game
It’s really quite a neat way to do a jigsaw puzzle, I tend to stick to the lower end of the number of pieces but you can go all the way up to 1000+ which makes it a real challenges. There’s a real mix of pictures, photographs or illustrations, patterns or landscapes, animals or cakes, it’s all in there. I like that once you’ve made your selection you get the board, and can filter the pieces by edges first - because all sensible people would do the edge pieces first, right?
The only downside to playing a digital puzzle is you can’t really riffle through the pieces and see what jumps out of you. The pieces are laid out in a column that you can scroll up and down, and drag around the board - either positioning them or putting them to the side, but it’s not quite the same. However, on the better side, once a piece is in the correct place, it locks in, so you can’t accidentally destroy it later (has never happened).
Thoughts
If you like puzzles and want a digital alternative to reality, I think this is completely serviceable. The playing is fine, so it’s really going to come down to the choice of photos and illustrations and whether they appeal, for me they’re fine so I’ll keep this app around to dip into now and again. It’s not going to become a regular thing but always handy to have when at a loose end in need of something simple to focus on.
