Absolute mayhem

Have you watched The Muppets Mayhem on Disney+? You may be thinking ’no, of course not, why would I’ but I’m here to tell you that you absolutely should. I wasn’t aware of Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem, even though by all accounts they’ve been around for nearly fifty years, but their comedy musical series that was released in May was surprisingly brilliant viewing.
At first, I gave it a watch thinking I would try the first episode and probably give it a miss after that. Ten minutes in and I had to reset, grab Mr C, and watch it all over again - the calibre of cameo guests was that good. And the rest of the episode lived up to that opening hype, with some great laughs, fun muppet shenanigans plus interesting insight into how the music world works.
The show features a junior music executive trying to wrangle the Mayhem into recording their first album to save the record company that she works for. But the Mayhem are more of a live act than a studio band and getting a full album of songs out of them is a lot harder than it sounds.
I’ve seen a few criticisms of the humans that are interacting with the muppets along the way, and whilst they may not have leapt off the screen in line for an Emmy, I think they all hold their own in what could otherwise be cringeworthy situations. And the concept of ‘And part of every day’ will live with me forever.
There are jokes, but there are serious moments, there are good messages, and lots of fun songs, and a heap of laughs along the way. I’m not entirely sure who the show is aimed at, it’s bright and colourful and childlike but there are some more adult moments and themes in there that make me wonder.
Ultimately, even if you don’t think it sounds like your cup of tea, I really recommend giving this series a go because it had no right to be as good as it was, but it absolutely smashed it out the park.
