A promo image for Green Wing Resuscitated featuring the main cast from left to right: Karl Theobald as Martin, Tamsin Grieg as Caroline, Julian Rhing-Tutt as Mac, Stephen Mangan as Guy, Pippa Haywood as Joanna, Mark Heap as Alan, and Oliver Chris as Boyce

I was so excited when I saw that Audible had commissioned and released an audio series of Green Wing, bringing back the original cast in all their glory for more barely medically-related shenanigans at East Hampton hospital. And now, having listened to the six part series many, many times through, I can only say it lived up to all my expectations and I love it!

Hands up, though, I wasn’t keen on the first listen through. It felt a bit odd, as Green Wing was such a visual show, that whilst some of the effects transferred and adapted to audio only, it felt like something was lost. Why can’t we actually SEE Sue White tap-dancing down the corridors of jail? But the more I listened, the more it grew on me. It was so nice to be back with this madcap cast of characters, bickering and plotting and generally getting on each other’s nerves.

There’s no pretending that ten years hasn’t passed either. We get to find out whether Mac died or not (promo images probably give that away), what Guy has been up to for the last decade, and if Martin did finally managed to pass his exams. We catch up with Sue continuing in her liaison position, and Harriet and Boyce in their respective promotions. And, of course, we learn what happened to Alan and Joanna after their joint suicide attempt at the end of the series. Once all caught up, there are new schemes to uncover as the plot unfolds.

There are layers in this too, each time I listen I pick out new things and realise there are references and foreshadowing and callbacks and more to learn each time through. It’s quite fun to hear the additional cast of Simon Kane and Margaret Cabourn-Smith because I know their voices so well from their work with John Finnemore. Both are produced by Ed Morrish so it all starts to make sense in the end.

If you’re a Green Wing fan, I can’t recommend this enough, and I really hope there is more to come - either on TV or in my ears, I’m (now, finally) happy either way.
