Pride is inspired by an extraordinary true story. It's the summer of 1984, Margaret Thatcher is in power and the National Union of Mineworkers is on strike, prompting a London-based group of gay and lesbian activists to raise money to support the strikers' families. Initially rebuffed by the Union, the group identifies a tiny mining village in Wales and sets off to make their donation in person. Thoughts
I'll be honest, we were expecting this to be a little bit BBC, and it had an element of that in spotting some of the famous faces (Russell Tovey alert). But actually, it was probably the best Lottery funded film we've seen. A really strong story, great characters, and such heart.
It surprised me that the 1980s could feel so alien from where we are now, but with the strikes and the politics, the anti-gay feeling and people working down the mines, there was a lot to take in - a lot to cram into two hours.
Very enjoyable movie with lots of good messages - value of friendship, tolerance, and generally being comfortable in your own skin. Own it!
