Last year’s Eurovision seemed like it had taken a bit too much of a turn towards a credible singing contest, losing some of that quirkiness that makes it the institution that it is. This year, things were a bit more nutty, which is exactly what I’m looking for.

Hilariously, I’ve read criticisms of the UK performance, saying we really should try harder and not send novelty acts. I mean, I would say the last couple of years we have had ‘proper’ songs, even if they weren’t actually very good, and that hasn’t done us any favours. Why shouldn’t we try something a bit more quirky? As soon as I heard Look Mum No Computer, I knew it was a Eurovision entry. I wasn’t expecting great things but I thought we might have got a bit more than one point. Oh well, roll on next year.

Meanwhile, it was a similar story to the 2025 competition, in which we all spent quite a lot of the results being nervous that Israel were going to win. I can’t claim a deep understanding of the politics of this situation, but I know that given several other countries had withdrawn from competing due to their continued participation, it probably wouldn’t have been a helpful turn of events for them to go on and win it.

I wanted Delta Goodrem to win, the song was incredible, the performance big and bold and beautiful, and I just love her generally. Although equally, I’m not sure how we would get on with Australia hosting, that would definitely be past my bedtime.

Last year I had pondered whether I would get something out of watching the qualifying rounds, and I do still think there’s a lot to be enjoyed in those rounds. According to Graham Norton, the winning Bulgarian entry was barely being talked about but then put in a storming performance and that’s why we suddenly ended up with the winner we did. But, the whole competition crept up on me this year so I didn’t have time to watch qualifying. Maybe next time, when we can do this all over again!
