Strictly 2026 Week 3: That's swagger

Three weeks into this year's Strictly live shows and the dance card is filling up with speciality dances. We've already seen a couple of Charlestons, two Couple's Choices and this time, the people's favourite, an Argentine Tango. For me, this is all too soon.

It's really obvious that the celebrities aren't ready for these more complex dances. They're just getting their heads around Latin and ballroom, the differences, the requirements, and then they get thrown a whole new, different thing. Melanie, who was unfortunately voted out this week, is a prime example of that. The dance was lacklustre in energy and lacking in technique, but that's because she has only three weeks of dance experience to build on.

Last week, Sarah danced a Charleston as Mary Poppins. It was a better job technically, but still weaker than it would have been later in the series. She hasn't had a chance to come out of her shell yet, and that's what really drives a good Charleston. Similarly, John's Couple's Choice last week had good tricks that he coped with, but you could see all the joins.

The specialist dances used to be something couples would aspire to get to - like Blackpool - and something the audience could look forward to in future weeks. It was a reward for getting far enough into the competition to be trusted with an Argentine Tango. Or to get a chance to share their story in Couple's Choice. Using them all up in the first few weeks leaves everyone with much less to look forward to.

There's an exception to the rule in this week's Argentine Tango, performed by Tabby and Mark. It was incredibly good and didn't look like it was lacking polish. This argues more for her talent and potential for the competition, though, than it does for keeping Argentine Tangos in week three.

I was sad to see Melanie go home so early, I think she could have given us a lot more (not least some Gavin & Stacey bods in the audience), but she was at the weaker end of the field. My picks are still holding strong. Shirley said of Delta: "I think you're going to go all the way." Dani Dyer impressed me this week, and Motsi called Tabby the dark horse of the competition. I still have John in my finalists lineup and Lawrence knocking on the door as an outsider, but I'm wondering if it could be Bethany and we get an all-female final. That would be amazing.

The Vito Report

Lacey and Vito were first on the dance floor this week, with a samba. Apparently this is Vito's favourite dance, so thankfully it went well. His favourite food, according to the VT, is tiramisu. I don't like tiramisu, but don't tell him.

The Yellow Card

Bethany's dress was pale yellow, so it avoided the problems I had with Dani's glaring Belle outfit last week. Bethany's dress also went really well with Nancy's orange one, so forgiven for this week.

Musical Crime of the Week

Poor Melanie had to dance to a monstrosity of a mash up. People have always confused Ooh Aah... Just a Little Bit and Saturday Night, we don't need to feed that by mixing the two songs together. It was awful and meant both felt rushed. This might actually be Musical Crime of the Series.

Roll call

  • Lacey & Vito: Samba - still moments of being nervous but we're starting to see her let go. Packed with content, a classy samba.
  • Will & Dianne: Waltz - looked very smooth and graceful but it was dull because it's a waltz.
  • Shaun & Alexis: Quickstep - started out fun but as soon as they got into hold it lost all joy and there were so many mistakes.
  • Cach & Maddie: Couple's Choice - technically good but jazzy so not my thing. They were out of sync the whole time too.
  • Jaime & Carlos: Viennese Waltz - great drama, very fast spins, too much rise and fall but an improvement.
  • Melanie & Aljaž: Charleston - very scrappy, not enough energy, quite flingy.
  • Sarah & Julian: Paso Doble - swept around the floor nicely with good drama, counting out loud is definitely off-putting.
  • Delta & Kai: Salsa - the opening kaleidoscope was so clever, and she has such great legs!
  • Lawrence & Jowita: Rumba - not too cheesy, he managed to look serious, not his usual smiley face.
  • Dani & Nikita: Tango - she really managed to get over her training room giggles, the drama and intensity was brilliant!
  • Graeme & Lauren: Jive - so much better than I expected, I liked the swing vibe to it, and he's so good at recovering from mistakes.
  • John & Katya: Cha Cha Cha - first Latin dance and he was feeling the pressure but Katya continues to choreograph out of this world.
  • Bethany & Nancy: American Smooth - lovely bright and sunny dance, frame was hit and miss though.
  • Tabby & Mark: Argentine Tango - incredibly good kicks and flicks. The intensity seeped from the screen and the lifts were perfect.

It's just been confirmed today that Delta won't be dancing this weekend due to a rib injury. She'll sit out a week and hopefully be back up and on the dance floor the following week. I'm keeping my fingers crossed both for her to get back to doing what she loves, and for my predictions to remain intact!
