Player Select

I downloaded this game because it was free to me as an Apple Arcade subscriber, and looked a lot like Tetris. As someone with an addictive personality, Tetris holds a fond place in my heart! This one has two modes - classic where you just keep playing until you lose (11k high score for me), and adventure where you play through specific levels and goals. I got to level six before I gave up.

The trouble is, the game wants to be Tetris but does it slightly differently. You're placing those familiar block shapes against each other as a puzzle rather than against the clock. It means it is more of a casual game - you can pick it up and put it down at will, rather than having to give it your 100% focus as with Tetris. But that also works against it, because it's missing the addictive adrenaline of getting those blocks in the right place before they drop.

When I was playing through the levels, I got to level six and just got stuck. You're presented with three pieces at a time and if there's no room for any of them because of the way you've placed previous pieces, you're out. I retried a couple of times and for whatever reason could not get past that level. I couldn't see any way of getting hints or skipping anything. It was so frustrating, I put the game down and just couldn't face going back to it.

Thoughts

Ultimately, I found this game boring. The tension of playing Tetris isn't there and there's nothing really added to replace it. I won't be picking it up again. The original Block Blast app was the most downloaded mobile game of 2025 so I'm in the minority but, for me, this is a 2 out of 5.
