Summer survival
Published August 2, 2026

This summer is a big one, heatwaves and droughts and consistent weather that we're just not used to in the UK. I don't know about anyone else, but it's really just become a matter of survival and I genuinely think I will never complain about being cold again. In the meantime, although the forecast is suggesting slightly reduced temperatures going forward, there's not really an end in sight for this summer nonsense.
I was glad, then, to receive Miranda Hart's monthly newsletter with her top ten tips for summer survival. We know Miranda can be relied upon for some sensible and silly thoughts, both in equal measure, and both absolutely human and realistic. I won't spoil them all here, because you should be signing up to the newsletter yourself, but my favourite three:
4. Dress for joy, not fashion. If it’s floaty, stretchy, or feels like pyjamas pretending to be clothes — it is correct summer attire. As you know, I love a kaftan.
7. Move at your own pace. Summer does not require productivity. It requires hydration and a lie-down.
10. Be kind to yourself. You do not need a “summer body”. You need a body in summer. That’s it.
Particularly this last one, that is sticking in my head more than anything right now.
