Crease and desist

Published September 11, 2026

I didn’t really want to watch this week’s Apple announcement because Tim Cook’s handed over the keys of the empire to John Ternus and I was mildly sad about that. John did a great job, though, and even brought back the ‘one. more. thing.’ And what a product to have saved it for!

The iPhone Duo shown folded, as a short, wide phone, and unfolded, as a tablet-sized screen with no visible crease

The iPhone Duo - Apple’s first foldable device. Of course they are behind the curve in terms of bringing a foldable product to market, but it’s no surprise that they’ve spent the time working on the finer details. The real shock is the price, an eye-watering 2k whether you’re looking at pounds or dollars.

To be honest, you can see where the money has been spent. The worst thing about foldables is the horrible hinge, and Apple have made that as invisible as possible. They’ve brought in the matte screen from the later iPads which is life-changing - I’ve used one and now my non-matte iPad pales in comparison. And they’ve crafted some kind of magical transition between open and folded. If you’re looking at the screen with it closed, and start moving the two halves apart, your front screen content blurs and blends into the screen behind it. I thought it was obviously mocked up in the promotional video, but have seen some hands-on videos that show it working as described!

This isn’t a reflection on John’s first big reveal, but I don’t want one. I’ve not seen it in the flesh but I can already tell I don’t like the shape. Squatter than a regular iPhone and with an obnoxious camera bump on the back, it just looks ugly to my eyes. I’m happy to wait for a future version.
