May the Fourth Wall be with you

Published September 20, 2026

Whilst scrolling through TikTok, an intro video appeared for the Fourth Wall Bookshop - a new online bookshop that has a specific focus on movies, musicals and theatre. That's my idea of heaven! I immediately started browsing and curating a shortlist of titles I'd love to have on my coffee table. (Although I actually need to get a coffee table first.)

The shop has a great backstory, from the about page:

Hi, I’m Jack, a musician, conductor and lifelong enthusiast of film and theatre. After founding The Studio Orchestra, a 70-piece orchestra celebrating the music of stage and screen, I left an eight-year career in supply chain planning to build the bookshop I’d always wished existed.

My first search, obviously, was for Back to the Future. It had a couple of results - two of which I already own, and a third which was a book I'd never heard of. It was out of stock and when I came back to the bookshop later, it had disappeared completely. That's a shame because I'd have bought it instantly, but it's also understandable with a new and independent store. I quickly moved on to my second choice and snapped this up instead: Jurassic Park - The Official Script Book.

It was a bit fiddly setting up an account, I experienced a couple of minor errors but nothing off-putting. I was very happy to see the store accepts Apple Pay, always an extra bonus point for shops that make it super easy to buy, and the purchase process is handled by Shop so you can easily track your order as it progresses.

The book arrived very quickly via Royal Mail, safely in an Amazon-style package, and with a handwritten note.

Sometimes I prefer my shopping experiences to be impersonal - I'll always choose a self-checkout if I can. But receiving an order like this, with that extra personal touch, it's a lovely thing. I'm sure I'll be back on the Fourth Wall site in future, and this experience has also made me interested in the subscription area on the site. You get a screenplay sent to you monthly. It's pricey (although £95 for six months works out to about £16 a month, not so bad for a film-related surprise through your door) but given there was a hand-written note with a one off purchase, I'd be keen to see what special touches come with a subscription.
