Thoughts
I've had this book on my to-read list for a while but decided to hold off until I'd seen the film, just from a spoiler-free point of view. I had a previous book by Gillian Flynn though and knew it was probably going to be a bit darker than I might at first have thought.
I really liked the first half of the film. The psychological aspects, the mystery, the questions raised, the concerns with just the occasional glimpse of humour. A detective literally holding the first clue was pure genius! The acting was good, and the film very well made, although it had some typical Fincher fast-paced dialogue here and there.
The second half went downhill rapidly, I felt, and the ending left me dispirited and depressed. That they all just went along with it didn't make any sense. That they would be bringing a life into this world felt wrong. Having drawn out the mystery for two hours, the next few months were all over in just a couple of minutes. The pacing was odd, and I switched off feeling unsettled and grumpy.
