There's undeniable chemistry between the leads - in fact, it's electrifying - in the chart-topping, dancefloor-filling, feelgood musical romance between two star-crossed lovers at a 1950s California high school. She's a good girl who has to play bad to land a bad boy who's really quite good. The perfect soundtrack to happy days - and, uh, summer nights.

1:24I love that she's Australian in this one.
3:24Some of these cartoon portraits, I just wouldn't appreciate them if I was the cast.
7:04I never noticed that bit before. "I'm no stranger to heartbreak." Is that just because of Danny?
10:34"If you can't be an athlete, be an athletic supporter."
15:04How does John Travolta do the chicken whilst walking down the bleachers and make it look cool?
18:13Rizzo is just so cool.
22:09He's brought a water pistol to a knife fight.
29:28I do always wonder about this Annette character.
34:44Can never take this song seriously because of the flamingo in the background.
41:37Why wouldn't you paint your car engine red, white and blue?
42:46Did Rizzo come out of the toilet with an ice cream? That seems unsanitary.
48:12Danny trying out sports is one of my favourite bits.
1:08:12"Let's hear it for the toilet paper!"
1:09:15I maybe hadn't registered how much of a creep Vince is.
1:18:45Ha, a federal charge for mooning a dance-off.
1:20:27Danny laughing that he elbowed her does make me chuckle.
1:21:13Never noticed that line either, he tried to put stuff in her drink????
1:26:23"It's as hot as the parts on it."
1:34:07Just a thought - without Grease would there be Fast & Furious?
1:43:08Them going through the funhouse is a lot of fun. Although it's mostly JT throwing himself around.

Thoughts

This is a childhood favourite, an absolute classic, and one that it's taken far too long to Film Watch. However, I had to wait until Mr C was ready for the brilliance of it and today was the day.

There's a lot to love, obviously, the music is incredible, the story fun, the performances hit and miss. There were more layers to it than I remembered though. This is a movie that I already had revelations about from watching it as a kid and then again slightly older. This time, I was surprised at how overtly predatory Vince Fontayne is, particularly the bit about him slipping aspirin into her drink. Outrageous!

And if I'm being truly honest, I could do without the cartoon at the beginning and the flying car at the end, but who cares? It's still a proper classic.
