Ofelia is a young girl in a remote mountain village in Spain in 1944 after Franco's ascension to power. To escape the upheaval and hardship her family faces (her father died in the war and her mother has been forced to re-marry to a despotic Captain in Franco's fascist army), Ofelia creates a world in her mind. It's a beautiful place though not without its dark side but she's guided by a ghastly yet kindly fawn creature.

Thoughts
During the Children in Need evening, film aficionado Bassano said he would donate to the cause if a few of us watched some films. Mine was Pan's Labyrinth, a movie I had barely even heard of beforehand. It took me a week or two to squeeze it into my schedule but I found time yesterday - I wasn't at all sure what to expect.
I wasn't really sure what to make of it to start with - it seemed to be two distinct parts. The fairy tale aspect, with Alice in Wonderland exploration and creatures, and then the horror of real life, with gruesome torture and many, many deaths. Who is that meant to be aimed at? Despite the bleak story and the ultimately very depressing ending, it was a fascinating watch. I enjoyed the subtitles and the fantasy aspect was fabulous. I did like it, but I don't really know how to put it into words.
