Having spent her twenties comfortably inert, 28 year old Megan reaches a crisis when she finds herself squarely in adulthood with no career prospects, no particular motivation to pursue any and no one to relate to, including her high school boyfriend. When he proposes, Megan panics and given an opportunity to escape - at least temporarily - she hides out in the home of her new friend, 16-year-old Annika and Annika's world-weary single dad. Director Lynn Shelton crafts a warm, funny romantic journey of three people who find their lives intertwined in sudden, unexpected ways, as they try to make their way in the imperfect reality of modern day life.

Thoughts

The second film in a row that has a weird naming situation. According to the people's encyclopedia, this was called Laggies by the screenwriter, but the director wasn't too sure as no one had ever heard of the term (apparently it means adult slackers). In the UK, it was released as Say When.

Regardless of what it was called, I really loved it. The concept is slightly bizarre and you do sort of have to suspend your disbelief that she could actually hang around with a kid 12 years younger than her for a full week, but otherwise, it's brilliant. Warm and funny, and with Sam Rockwell looking good for a change, I was invested and wanted it all to work out for the best. Plus, they have a tortoise so I was sold from that moment on.
