Thoughts

Once again, Top of the Pops replays have forced my hand. Lulu rocked up with a 'new' song in early 2000 and I had no idea she was resurrecting her career again at that point. And it was a surprisingly good song, so what would the album be like?

Actually, this album doesn't seem to have arrived until three years later, but the wait must have been worth it. It doesn't have that desperation that sometimes comes across when an older artist is trying to stay relevant, these are good, credible songs. The TOTP one, Where the Poor Boys Dance, wraps up the album with an upbeat tempo and a feeling that Lulu was still trying to find herself, even after forty years in the business. The opener, Keep Talking... I'm Listening features a gravelly vocal over a catchy beat that makes you want to not just keep talking, but keep listening too.

There are ballads on the album too, with Lulu's Scottish lilt doing a lot of work to make them sumptuous, but the majority of tracks are smooth rock and roll, giving the whole thing a positive and engaging vibe.

I'm giving this top score because from the very start, Lulu grabs your attention by inviting you into her world and she keeps it throughout ending on that uptempo banger.
