Thoughts

I have a lot of respect for Little Big Town and always enjoy seeing them pop up on country concerts, but I realised I've only actually listened to one of their albums so far. This new one was released with the promise of great harmonies and a focus on the art, so it deserved a listen.

I could just picture sitting in a bay window, watching the rain pouring down outside and listening to this atmospheric album. It does have a focus on the vocals, the music just there in the background to support the harmonies.

There's a nice variety through it though, in song lengths, in genres. The Idea was just a bit heartbreaking - Karen Fairchild's believable stoicism on realising her partner doesn't love her anymore. "I ain't the woman that you wanted / If it wasn't for a promise, you'd be gone". Crickets was too funky for my tastes, and then lovely Kelsea Ballerini pops up to pick things back up on Closing Time. If Little Big Town are taking a shot at the dying art of making an album, they've done a good job of showing how it should be done.

The album gets a 3 out of 5 because whilst I enjoyed listening to it and it's not a one-note record, it's still a specific mood, and not one I'm going to reach for often.
