Thoughts

I had never heard of beabadoobee, but Mr C listened to the album and recommended it, so I prioritised it for this week.

The title track, Pylon, opening the album, had me picturing myself leaning out the window of a car, listening to this as I drive off to a new life. The second track, Sun Has Set, was a similar vibe - pop that sounds like it's starting to lean more towards punk. Occasionally, beabadoobee's vocals sound like Hayley Williams from Paramore, which is fun because she's a guest on Nothing to Prove (I couldn't tell them apart when we got there!). There's a sprinkling of distortion on the voices and guitars, but I liked that everything felt connected, not like voices sitting on top of a backing track.

The whole album works as a cohesive unit and the quality was high throughout. There were no standout singles for me to recognise as I hadn't heard of this artist before, but equally there were no dips in energy from start to finish. Even the slower tracks, such as Powerlines with Brendan Yates, have grinding guitars and blended voices that keep you paying attention.

A surprise to me, but a real cohesive find, this is a 4 out of 5 album, and I'm keen to seek out some of beabadoobee's previous albums too.
