| 1:39 | The Burj Khalifa is absolutely mind-boggling, rising up out of the dunes like that. |
| 5:52 | I wonder in real life how many restaurants have random people using their kitchens as a back exit. |
| 6:22 | "You're deputy director of the CIA, you can't just call?" |
| 16:48 | Why are ship horns so obnoxious? |
| 28:32 | "What the hell's Starling?" So say us all. |
| 29:48 | No way do I believe Greer is a bad guy. Not after all this. |
| 33:18 | "Take a good look, I am the cost. Every night that I come home to nothing, to no one. And every day that I wake up and realise that that dream they sent me out to fight for may not even exist!" |
| 39:00 | A lot of exposition in this film so far. |
| 42:25 | I like that we're not in a glitzy bit of London. This feels more like the streets in Slow Horses. |
| 51:18 | Obligatory car chase. |
| 52:33 | Quite like that it ended in silence and church bells though. Very London. |
| 1:02:15 | I dunno, Sienna Miller's doing her best, but this just feels like a lot of man facing off to each other. |
| 1:09:11 | Look at that old school computer, surrounded by post it notes. Ah, nostalgia. |
| 1:13:49 | "You know, first unexpected thing today." "It won't be the last." |
| 1:23:40 | Argh, glass floors! |
| 1:31:42 | "Back fucking door, baby!" |
| 1:35:40 | You have to write a hand-written letter to the President to get someone the deputy director job? |
Thoughts
I've only recently finished watching the Jack Ryan series that this follows, so it seemed like a good time to tick it off the list. The TV show started well but sort of drifted off for me, so I went into this with tempered expectations.
I find John Krasinski very engaging, his face full of expression and his monologue about coming home to an empty house because of everything his job has cost him was a moving moment. His love/hate relationship with Greer also makes the film bearable but the rest of the plot was hard to care about.
Some of the visuals were good, starting with Dubai's sparkling lights and then moving on to London in all its grubby glory. The rest felt like a pretty standard action thriller with all the beats, car chase here, twist there. We got to twenty minutes from the end, and I considered switching off, but by then you might as well see it through.
So, for some good cinematography offset by a plot that I couldn't repeat to you despite having just watched it, it's a 2 out of 5.
