Something in the Water

Fear finds new depths

Film info

2:21Will never understand that much hatred for literally no reason.
9:31"Okay ladies, let's Fast & Furious the shit out of this place."
12:43A bit of S Club, don't mind if we do.
21:01I get nervous whenever people swim around in coral reefs because they usually cut themselves.
26:03Blood on the sand always seems so incongruous.
30:45One life jacket among five friends could lead to one heck of a philosophical conversation.
33:18"Treading water's a piece of piss, Lizzie. It's like riding a bike. Except in water. And the bike's invisible."
40:06How quickly she can go from Ruth to The Body.
48:39I don't think sharks can hear 'over here' can they?
50:57Wow, she at least went down punching!
56:15"Come back over, you rich bastards." Not entirely their fault but sure.
1:06:23Okay, worst bit so far. You don't want to be out there by yourself.
1:10:28Now it's just The Shallows again.

Thoughts

This was on the BBC iPlayer, promoted underneath Jaws 2 which I recently watched. It stuck in my mind, as I do like shark films. It's a low-budget British film so you have to go into it knowing there aren't going to be lots of expensive effects.

It actually stands up quite well in terms of visuals. You don't really see the shark(s) that often, so the terror can be built up in your mind. The girls aren't very relatable (who would really abandon two enemies on a deserted island like that?) but they have some funny moments. Teaching Lizzie to swim was great: "Treading water's a piece of piss, Lizzie. It's like riding a bike. Except in water. And the bike's invisible."

The only real problem with the film is how often it felt like something new or important was going to happen... and then it didn't. It had no reason to start with a hate crime, that had nothing to do with the rest of it. The friends didn't argue over the life jacket, just gave it to the half-dead girl. I really think someone would have said something selfish at that point. The bit where she ended up on the reef was derivative of The Shallows and could have tried something different instead.

The movie was better than I thought it would be but the missed opportunities throughout mean I'm settling for a 3 out of 5.
