Toy Story 5

It's on.

Film info

The toys are back in Disney and Pixar's 'Toy Story 5', and this time it's Toy meets Tech. Buzz Lightyear, Jessie, and the rest of the gang's jobs are challenged when they come face-to-face with Lilypad, a brand-new tablet device that arrives with her own disruptive ideas about what is best for their kid, Bonnie. Will playtime ever be the same?

Thoughts

I will always want to watch a new Toy Story film, they've always scored highly with me in the past (even though the scene in the furnace has stuck with me as a horror). Being something of a tech-head, I was worried this one was going to be preachy - toys good, tech bad. It wasn't, but only because it was a bit of a mess.

The best moment was Jessie finding the tin under the tree. Three quarters of the way through and Jessie found the photo of her previous owner, now grown up, and proof that she still remembered and loved her former toy. It was an emotional moment that proved, as Toy Story films always should, that toys can have a huge impact on a life.

The rest of the film did not feel like Toy Story should, it was a compromise to make the story work. A hard rule used to be that toys would freeze when humans were in the room. Now, toys only freeze when they think humans are not paying attention.

Jessie took a huge risk sneaking off while Bonnie was asleep. What if she woke up? I wake up all the time! The moment when all the horses were peering over the shelf at the girl on her laptop below would never have happened in a previous film. No one seemed to notice all the rogue messages and images the Lilypad was sending and receiving either.

The compromise made its way into the graphics too. They are so improved and very impressive while you're watching. But realism is not what I come to a Toy Story film for. This looked more like real life with animated toys running around on top of it, and somehow made it all less believable.

I would happily watch Toy Story 6 if it ever exists, but this one can sit firmly in the past - it's a 2 out of 5.
