The World is Not Enough

As the countdown begins for the new millennium, there is still one number you can always count on

Film info

James Bond, the world's greatest secret agent, is sent once more into the breach in the name of Queen, country, and a dry martini. In the 19th Bond adventure, 007 must resolve a potentially deadly power struggle between two unstable nations, with control of the world's oil supply as the ultimate prize. Bond is assigned as bodyguard to Elektra King, the daughter of a petroleum magnate who was brutally murdered, and is trying to foil the fiendish plot of Renard, a villain who was shot in the head with an unusual result: he cannot feel physical pain.

29:39A helicopter carrying saw blades cutting down trees seems like an accident waiting to happen.
37:20Skidoos on parachutes is a bizarre way to travel.
43:09The last thing Bond needs is glasses that help him perv.

1:08:29That was all very intense.
1:10:02I can’t believe none of the MI6 people think that video was suspicious.
1:16:21“He’s the best we have, though I’d never tell him.”

1:36:27God, those helicopters are definitely evil. “The insurance company is never going to believe this.”
1:43:33FAMILY MOTTO.
2:04:14The Christmas thing really ruins this whole film.

Thoughts

This was a pretty fantastic Bond, arguably the best.

Two strong female characters, although I properly cannot get over the name Christmas. Bond films do funny names, I understand, but Christmas Jones isn't a pun in and of itself, and they barely reference it until right at the end. Weird. Loved Sophie Marceau, the right mix of vulnerability and vengefulness.

Robert Carlyle does good psychopath, even if his accent was pretty laboured at times. He looked just like Blofeld as well, which added to the context of the series. Sad to see Desmond Llewellyn bid farewell as Q, but I laughed hysterically at the inflatable jacket swallowing John Cleese for a good long while.

Relevant plot, which could still be very much the subject of a film today, and although there were some crazy stunts, it was all spectacular rather than silly. And nothing too gory! Hoorah!
